IVA is a less severe debt solution than bankruptcy. It has less social stigma and it lets you keep your house and your car which you would lose in case of bankruptcy. You might also be able to write off a significant portion of your debt at the end of the IVA.

Don't you think he's losing his edge? His performance is on a downward, but still respectable clip.

@Aaron, good point. Buffet has often said that he buys businesses not stocks

@John, if the series develops well enough, there may be a book in it. Let me see how it goes. Thanks for the offer and I will keep it in mind!!!

One more important factor to remember is that Buffet isn't strictly an investor. He often plays an active role in the companies he buys into (serves on their boards).

@Doppler, agreed on your point about leverage. I am not advocating margin and I did point out that margin is not risk free (unless you are buying risk free securities with it; certainly not stocks). I also tried to show how Buffet's use of leverage (using float) is different than what most investors use for leverage, that is margin. Thanks for bringing more clarity to what I wanted to say

That being said, and with a caveat that anyone contemplating use of margin needs to carefully weigh risk and rewards, it is only fair to point out that there have been instances of extremely good investors using margin appropriately to a great effect. Shelby Davis comes to mind

I would be careful about using leverage, the leverage that Buffett uses from "float" is far different then leverage from buying on margin. Leverage does not add to value; it only magnifies results (up or down!). Margin also lets Mr. Market dictate your actions, forcing you to sell or put up more collateral. Just ask Carlyle Capital how they returns were; they leveraged up and bought goverment backed securities and now they are bust. Remeber the market is there to serve you not instruct you.
